Why some old designs are worth revisiting - http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/2489 ... _story.php
Alex Wawro wrote: If there's one thing the founder of Psyonix seems to take from all this, it's that having a game you love not get the attention you think it deserves doesn't necessarily mean you failed -- it might just mean you pulled the trigger too soon.

“Look at how similar this game is to the original one. And yet, look at the difference in its success; I think there's a lot of lessons to be learned there, in terms of how much polishing a gameplay concept can make a difference, and how much your timing makes a difference,” says Hagewood. “This game is coming out right now when there's kind of a lull, and it's also at a time when eSports and YouTube and Twitch streaming are really big. The game has always shined in that respect, even back in 2009, but...all that stuff is so much more important now. “

“So if you have a game concept that doesn't do well, it's not necessarily true that the concept is a failure. It's not necessarily worth dropping that idea. Maybe it just needs to be done in a better way, or at a better time.”

As we mentioned in our launch post earlier this month, the Supersonic Fury DLC Pack includes two brand new Battle-Cars: the over-the-top American muscle car Dominus, and the souped-up Japanese street racer Takumi. Both of these vehicles offer six different Decals for Garage customization (12 total) and are only available for play in the DLC.

Besides the new Battle-Cars, the DLC Pack also includes two all-new Rocket Boosts (“Nitrous” and “Burnout”), two new Wheel sets (the soccer ball-themed “Cristiano” and the very-cool “Spinner” set), five all-new Paint Types (“Brushed Metal,” “Carbon Fiber,” “Metallic Pearl,” “Pearlescent,” and “Wood”), and a handful of new Trophies. This entire collection will be available in early August for $3.99.

That DLC trailer is a pretty good representation of the game. It also highlights the game's soundtrack, which when paired with the insane action, cracks me up every time. It's only a shame that you only ever get to hear it in the menu, where instead you'll only be cracking up at the idea of the serious insanity which it conveys. Maybe that's the better choice, but it's more likely that it was chosen just to emulate the many sports games that do the same thing with their soundtracks.

So what's the deal with all these critics who have gone on record condemning a game because it "adds nothing really new on its own, just slightly more polished and nice looking", and then give Rocket League some of their highest praise?

Where is the consistency?

I've thought about reducing the star rating to two-stars for my review, since I now have practically zero interest in ever loading it up again (or of ever seeing any more videos of it), but that would betray all the great laughter I'd had with my first few sessions. Those are still worth three stars.

I'll still buy the DLC that just came out and play a few more rounds with it before uninstalling it though. Something of a final send-off.
