I can believe it. With my own eyes, I've seen players stumble through the tutorial with no idea on how to parry an attack. And they continue happily along, never using it, until they get to Blade Wolf, at which point they start to freak out. I suppose, under the right circumstances, it's possible to continue brute forcing your way all the way to the end without parrying, but I can imagine you'd probably come away with a relatively negative impression of the game if you did.

“A game with full blown, fast-paced action.”
I love that. “So good you could die.”

Monsoon's Speech - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWlSR4cqnNA

Metal Gear games often break the illusion induced by genre familiarity and an acceptance of videogame tradition, and look the player in the eye saying, "You enjoy all the killing. How can you be a hero? These corpses you left behind were no threat to you. What kind of a monster are you? Listen to the fear in the enemy! Can you hear it? Villain!"
