[WIIU] Splatoon
Re: [WIIU] Splatoon
I didn't like shooting games. Then I fell in love with Splatoon - http://boingboing.net/2015/06/05/splatoon.html
It's the overcoming of this bias against the genre that eventually leads to falling in love with its games.
Straight up deathmatch has been lame since 1996. That's around the time that the novelty of blasting your friends in Doom and Quake began to wear off, and developers and players began to realize that fragging isn't the end-all and be-all of shooting games. There are so many more interesting possibilities yet to explore.Laura Hudson wrote:although you can "splat" your opponents, success is ultimately measured in your color's total surface area, not "kills."

Once fragging has been removed from the core of the game, settings like what we have here in Splatoon emerge.

Wasn't too impressed with the mini-level design of the single player content and only played it sparingly at first. But then toward the end of the second platform (world?), you're actually given a few real levels to play in, with enemies comparable to yourself thrown in, and it started getting a little better. I don't care much for the puzzle / gimmick stages, full of mini-islands designed to accommodate a child's attention span, and I find the rare moment of going, "that was clever" doesn't outweigh the tedium I mostly feel when playing them.
The boss fights can be pretty cool though.
