Was a little on the fence about this one, since it reminded me so much of last year's Legend of Korra, but that new trailer's convinced me. I'll be playing it on day one.

What a fun bunch of licenses Platinum has gotten to work with over the years: Metal Gear, Korra, Transformers, Nier, and Star Fox. I wonder what they'll get to work with next.

Secretly hoping against all hope that this will pave the way for them developing a Mobile Suit Gundam game.

Played a little bit of this yesterday, and of course, it doesn't measure up to Metal Gear Rising. It instead opts for a Bayonetta-like combat system, with its rolling dodges, slow downs, and transformation finishers. I never really liked Bayonetta's combat all that much, and felt that Rising's aggressive, non-rolling, parry-based system both looked and felt so much better than everything else before it that I'm a little disappointed to see this regression. Then again, I'm not quite proficient with the combat system here yet, so this is just a first impression.
But the cel shading is just fantastic. It makes the game look like you're playing an exciting anime. No doubt, that was the intent. The game is always lush and visually striking, and a real delight to see in action. It's a vast improvement over last year's Legend of Korra, but maybe that's just because robots look so much better rendered this way than anything else, that is until they can solve the problem of applying Arc System Works' gorgeous cel-shading technology from Guilty Gear Xrd into a 3D game like this. The music also reminds me a lot of Metal Gear Rising's, which was just perfect for that game, so I'm happy to see them retain that style. It's a great soundtrack for pummeling bots.
I got as far as the first boss, but I haven't beaten him yet. It's not as visually glorious an encounter as the first Rising boss fight, and maybe it's a little unfair to keep comparing the two, but seeing as the games share a director, Kenji Saito, and Transformers can feel very Rising-like at times, the comparisons just come naturally.
