[N64] Donkey Kong 64
Re: [N64] Donkey Kong 64
This recently came out on the Wii U Virtual Console, and since I played it to completion years ago when it first came out, the colorful logo combined with some screenshots and the first few seconds of the promo video were more than enough to get me to buy it right there on the spot. In case you're wondering, "Who buys Virtual Console games? lol." I do.
Back in the late 90s, Rare really did seem to have bottled up somewhere in their studio a vial of pure magical essence, which they'd mix in from time to time across projects. You can see it most clearly in their 3D platformers, specifically in terms of their unmatched aesthetic. They created cartoon worlds full of whimsical fancy and playful animations, draped with richly colorful landscapes that seem as if they were painted, and accompanied by musical compositions that communicate a spirit of child-like wonder and amazement. It's no wonder that as soon as they decided to mix in filth with the rest that they eventually collapsed.
But even in a game like Donkey Kong 64, there's a feeling here. And it's not just nostalgia.

Fascinating! Apparently the bundled Expansion Pak functioned as a day-one patch.According to Chris Marlow, a programmer at Rare at the time, the 4 MB version had an unknown bug that was only fixed by the Expansion Pak. As a result Rare had to include the Expansion Pak with the game for free, resulting in "costing them a fortune"
