Re: [360] [PC] [ONE] Gears of War
Got into the Ultimate Edition's beta and played it online for a bit. It's a wonderful thing to hear Kevin Riepl's incredible soundtrack again, as it, along with rest of the first game's sound design, really nails that Gears aesthetic like nothing else ever has since. Steve Jablonsky's work on the sequels never could quite measure up to Riepl's original score.
Anyway, one problem that newcomers had with the game was differentiating between COG and Locust soldiers in multiplayer. It took a few hours for players to figure out what to look for in order to consistently identify a friend or foe, but once you figured it out, it stopped being a problem. Nonetheless, it was something that all new players had to grapple with. Gears of War 2 solved this in a clever way with its color-coded armor lights, but for some reason the Ultimate Edition is taking another approach entirely. Instead of something elegant and appropriate like armor lights, they give every player at a certain distance away from you a color-coded, glimmering "force field". It's not really a shield, but it sure looks like one. Shimmering radioactive red for the Locust. Blue for COG.
It looks awful.
I was also shocked to discover that the Ultimate Edition is going to redo all of the original's cutscenes. Is that really necessary? Gears of War did not have a cutscene problem, in fact, I consider this one right here to be one of the greatest videogame cutscenes of all time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2_nWlK_tJg
You can see clips of the "ultimate edition" of this cutscene in that Behind the Scenes video above, and it just makes my heart sink.

Should the bullets come from the barrel of the gun? Or the center of the screen? https://gearsofwar.com/en-us/forums/98b ... -no-43-meh
Epic has been doing the former since Gears 2, but what about the remastered Ultimate Edition for the first Gears? Do you fix it to be like the others? Or don't you?

Now I loved Gears of War, and I never had any issue with the center screen shots, in or out of multiplayer. I was even a little surprised to learn that's how it actually was. But I've played a lot of Gears 2 and 3 since then, and in certain situations, which depending on your playstyle might be quite rare, this return to the old system creates problems. Problems that it would seem a remastered "ultimate edition" ought to fix.Pyro wrote: It really is sad that so many Gears fans are coming to this forum complaining about things that should be changed for this remaster. It is as if people don't recognise that we are getting two games from The Coalition: One is a remaster of Gears 1, the other is Gears of War 4 - which is the game that should take into account all the successes and failures of the previous series based on the wider community consensus. Ever since this remaster was rumoured, I thought it was perfectly clear that this is being made specifically as fan service for the old school fans of Gears 1 based on all the vets that called for this.
These things people are complaining about, calling for changes and tweaks for, mainly the origin of the bullets, are really baffling me. I am usually a lurker on just about every site I use, but I am posting out of fear that the game I have been hoping for is going to be tweaked into an unrecognisable game from what I have wanted all these years, all because people don't seem to understand a simple concept.
Yes the old school fans want a graphical touch up, yes we want servers to counter the horrible lag games of that time had, yes we welcome new game modes and skins, no we don't want core mechanics (I don't know how many times I have read people say the same thing only to be told that remasters should change this and that...) like wall bouncing and the origin of your bullets changed.
I don't care what your definition of a remaster is or what changes the Halo collection had, this game is a remake of an old game for the old school fans, exactly as the old school fans have been asking for. This is a gift from The Coalition. Some of the complaints about sound, and some of the odd one-shot downs people are getting with the shotgun are the types of things we should be highlighting for the Devs to tweak and fix (and the point of this beta), not the things you personally don't like about Gears of War 1.
If you don't like the core mechanics in this beta then unfortunately you wouldn't have liked Gears 1, which does not mean Gears 1 needs to be changed for you...

Instead we are going to be left with a game that mimics the inconsistencys we experienced in the first game. Yes we have the fans that are saying this is how the game should play, but we are not in 2006 anymore. The fact is when this game was made it could have been a lot better. Constrictions on technology meant that this game was limited in its ability to perform. If we make this game exactly the way it was in 2006 we are not doing this game any justice. Yes this is gears but we are not in the year 2006 anymore nobody wants a game that plays like it was made in 2006. We want old style gears in new style format. You die hard gears fans as you call yourself do not have a clue. For gears to move forward we need to forget and move on. Yes gears 1 was a great game and the reason why I bought my Xbox 360 in the first place but it was a seriously flawed game and now we have a chance to put it right. If I want to play gears of war 1 I can put it in my Xbox 360 and play it. But if I want to play gears of war 1 how it should have been I now have the chance. Please don't stop this game been what it should have been from the beginning.

Wutdaflux wrote: But, Gears 1 was a mess. Buggy as hell, clunky, and exploits galore. It was a mess and CONSTANTLY complained about, even by the loyal fans who seem to be conveniently forgetting that or pass it off as "part of the experience" now, though I doubt they would tolerate it in any other game released today. If the Gears Ultimate edition was released today without the nostalgia of 2006, it would completely bomb...nobody would buy it based on the beta we're playing right now. Nobody (or at best, very few).
Microsoft/The Coalition had a chance to make the original Gears a new staple of current gen and instead decided to put lipstick on a pig. Gears Ultimate could have been immensely better. I'm not saying it has to be Gears 2 or Gears 3, it could still have been Gears 1, but it should have been what Gears 1 could have been; smoother, more consistent, better mechanics, etc.
There's nothing wrong with loving flawed games, but to stick with decade old problems and flaws in the name for "nostalgia" instead of improving it makes no sense to me.
Sadly, as much as I'm complaining, I'm probably going to buy this pile of polished crap. Mostly because I have friends who want me to play it and second because of that whole "Gears 4 beta" thing (*shakes fist at Microsoft/Coalition*).

Here you can actually see in painful detail how The Coalition is butchering the original cutscenes. "We had to be restrained," the voiceover says. As they cut to a closeup of Raam's gory blade sinking to the hilt in Minh's gut.

It actually looks pretty good. But then again, I have no attachment to the classic opening cinematic.
